Because the foundation of a democracy is an educated populace- education is the single most important function of a government in a free country. If you leave it to "market" forces we'll have even worse disparities and we'll get market driven crap for education.

There was a terrific editorial by a father with children in a poor district here awhile back. But there was no link in the online paper. One of his points was that in this area the next school nearest to you is as likely to be in bad shape as the one you are in. A voucher does not give you the time or means to transport a child great distances. It is still afterall a school, not a Boarding School. He said it from the inside, much better than I could.
