SirRealist, whether the best definition or not, that is the primary definition of a recession. You are right that we very well could be in one and it certainly feels like one, nevertheless. By the way, consumer confidence while getting worse is still on the positive side of 100. The main thing is it's getting worse, but just wanted to point out that it's still considered more positive than negative, believe it or not.

I am surprised it is not well below 100 yet. I would think that mutual fund performance alone has made people feel a lot poorer and less confident. All I can say is that Mutual Fund advertising sure effectively convinced the masses that it's okay for their portfolios to be down 30-80%. "Don't worry, this is to be expected occasionally, they'll be back up." "Remember you invested for the long term." I bet we won't see many 1 year fund performance records in print anywhere. <g>
