Most people really don't expect to get anything from the Federal Government directly. I think bulk of Americans view the taxes they pay as something like a sacrifice to a god. If the god is angry with their sacrifice, they may lose their job and become poor, or become beset by other bad luck. If they propitiate the god, they will be rewarded with cars, VCRs and stuff.

Here's a good example of democrat demagogues playing into this god-verment superstition:

Lieberman today:
"I want to sound the alarm today," he said, "that unless we deal wisely with the bountiful growth we have had, we risk throwing it all away."


If we have tax cuts all our good luck will fly away. Just like what happened to the cargo cultists on these pacific islands when WWII ended.
