From a year ago.(Jan2000)................StockHouse: In that light, what are your favorite stocks right now?

Brendan Kyne: Well, in the Canadian marketplace if I was to stand back and look at where things are
today and where I see opportunities, I see opportunities in three areas. The first one I like is in the
technology area. I think over the next ten years, eventually more than half of the marketplace in the US
and Canada will be made up by technology stocks. Most of the new IPOs that we are seeing are
technology stocks. Most of the successful companies with strong earnings growth are technology
stocks. The key, basically, is finding those companies that are in the right marketplace and are
correctly positioned to benefit from what is going on. I will give you a few names that I like in Canada.
Obviously, JDS Uniphase [JDSU] continues to be a name I like tremendously. I think despite its
tremendous gain, its earnings outlook is absolutely incredible. They have well over a 100% earnings
growth rate. So, when I look at the stock and I say, "Well it is expensive in its 1999 earnings," it is half
of that in 2000 earnings and then half of that in 2001. With that kind of earnings growth literally every
three months that goes by, the stock [JDSU] gets that much cheaper. I expect that stock to do very well in the marketplace here in
2000.

Also, as far as believing, what we're told now is not what we were told as recently as weeks ago. So, whom is one to believe ??

I believe we're hearing repeated warnings on the same data and even for the same companies. In other words, some analysts and journalists are a little slow on the draw and we're just getting their downgrades.

Granted, there was a disjoint between JDS's post-merger guidance and what came a few days later from NT. But even so, JDS has maintained its outlook for the current quarter and for the full calendar year.

Companies like Avanex are not valid indicators of what's happening with the components makers. They have a couple niche products and when one cycles out (as their announcement indicates), they can have a couple rocky quarters. When it comes to systems players there's a big field and I do believe the strong will get stronger (ALA, JNPR, CIEN) and the weak weaker (LU and at least temporarily NT).

I heard tonight that Corning, Lucent, and Alcatel are completely sold out of fiber. Now, that has to indicate orders are still strong. And if carriers are putting in fiber, they'll eventually have to light it.
