SAN JOSE -- Intel Corp. on Monday announced that it has begun sampling a single-chip Gigabit Ethernet controller that the company believes will help accelerate the deployment of high-speed data networks. Gigabit Ethernet products currently on the market require a complex board-level design to accommodate the multiple chips needed to carry the functions of Intel's new 82544EI, said Mark Christensen, vice president and general manager of Intel's Network Communications Group.

“For OEMs, the real estate on a motherboard is critical,” he said at the Intel Developer's Forum here. “Because motherboards have limited room for components, designers often need to trade performance and functionality for space. The single-chip solution enables OEMs to pack more capabilities and higher performance into networking equipment, while simplifying the design and using a minimum of space.”

The E2544EI is about the size of a quarter, and uses 50% less power than previous generation controllers, Christensen said. The device will make it easier for OEMs to build Gigabit Ethernet network connections directly into servers, workstations, or networking devices using a LAN-on-motherboard (LOM) connection.

According to the Dell'Oro Group, Intel is currently the largest supplier of Ethernet and Fast Ethernet LOM connections, and Christensen said the E2544EI should quickly establish the company's position in Gigabit Ethernet.

The 82544EI provides support for the PCI-X bus, which helps to reduce communications bottlenecks within systems. The device supports a broad range of operating systems, including Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP; Linux; Novell Netware; SunSoft Solaris; and SCO UnixWare.

The 82544EI is currently sampling to server, workstation, and networking OEMs. General availability is scheduled for later this year.
