Hi Dave B; Re: "It is when your lead is shrinking all the time."

Like when Intel lost its commanding lead in the chipset business largely due to their insistence on RDRAM?

March 29, 1999:
Last year, Intel's PC chipset sales hit $1.26 billion, up slightly in a market that declined to $1.7 billion from 1997's $2.3 billion, according to Semico Research Corp., Phoenix. Intel's huge market share leaves little room for other players. Only Acer, Via, and SIS are visible as other actors on the PC chipset stage, with combined 1998 sales of about $300 million.

Now VIA's sales are at the billion dollar level, they went up three times between 1999 and 2000:

Typical commentary is:

A flaw in one of Intel's chipset designs, which led to, a product recall helped. But analysts say VIA's best move was to back a different memory technology from the Rambus standard touted by Intel as the wave of the future.

Dave,

So you think that Compaq is doing poorly, and Dell is doing well?
