We have had a cold front come in and it's raining. I had to get out my Garfield slippers and old purple robe and the space heater is again pointed at my feet. There was a recipe in A Taste of Home for Indoor S'mores. It involved baking pudding and graham crackers and chocolate bars and marshmallows in a casserole, and it was awful. Even Ammo wouldn't eat it. There are some things that should never be messed with and s,mores is one of them. Have you ever read A Taste of Home? I got that magazine for years. I loved it. Not because of the recipes, most of which are variations on chicken noodle casseroles and fruit salads, but because of its sincerity. EVery issue made me cry. I wept over the theme luncheons women made for their children's birthdays and church groups, and I sobbed over the refrigerators touchingly decorated with 4000 pictures and magnets of cats. Or the collections-- I am mesmerized by articles on women who have 369 creamers in animal shapes, or 1323 porcine objets d'art. There is a half page of funny dinner graces, and the obligatory "my child said the funniest thing..." column. THere is a kitchen make-over, and if you have sharp eyes, there is a two inch toothpick hidden in each issue. If you find it you can win new cookware, or a processor. I have never found it, but I understand that there are women who go through each issue page by page, line by line, picture by picture, for hours, seeking it. The theme lunches are the best, though. There was a dairy farmer's wife who did the cow theme (think a lot of beef, milk, and cheese recipes, and a Fisher-Price barn as the centerpiece, and a lot of cowskin material) and there was a quilting theme, with all the recipes named after quilting patterns, and the cake decorated in tiny multi-colored squares and a sewing basket centerpiece. People work so hard and then they take pictures and actually submit them to a magazine! It's just so damn American. I think we need to have one of those theme luncheons. We could do a gardening one, with a big rosebush as a centerpiece, surrounded by bags of mulch. We could eat with little shovels. From pots. We could have meatloaf shaped like a giant earthworm. Color the mashed potatoes brown and make mudpies out of them. And then stick carrots and radish roses and stuff in them like a little garden. The drinks could be served in little watering cans.
