Japan's PC Shipments in 2000 Up 30 Pct. to 14 Mln.: IDC Japan
February 28, 2001 (TOKYO) -- PC shipments in Japan in 2000 reached 14,131,110 units, for an increase of 30.4 percent compared with the previous year, according to a survey conducted by IDC Japan.

IDC Japan said it expects PC shipments in 2001 to reach 16,560,000 units.

The survey attributes the expansion of the PC market to the growing household PC user market.

Of the total shipment volume, PCs delivered to homes registered about 7,240,000 units, a growth of 47.8 percent over the prior year.

Shipments of PCs with CD-R/RW units and those complete with DVD-RAMs are growing rapidly. Also, deliveries intended for the business market came to about 6,890,000 units, showing a 16.1 percent increase over the previous year.

Classified by product type, desktop models (excluding PC servers) accounted for 7,525,000 units, up 28.8 percent compared with the previous year, while shipments of portables such as notebook PCs increased 32.9 percent from the preceding year to 6,283,000 units.

In terms of composition ratio, desktop models accounted for 53.3 percent; portables, 44.5 percent; and the remainder comprised PC servers. In comparison with the previous year, desktop shipments dropped 0.6 percentage point while portables gained 0.9 point.

Vendor rankings, PC shipment volumes and market shares in 2000 were: NEC Corp. with 3,072,000 units, for a share of 21.7 percent at the top of the list; followed by Fujitsu Ltd., 2,886,000 units, 20.4 percent; IBM Japan Ltd. in third place with 1,378,000 units, 9.8 percent; Sony Corp., fourth place with 1,240,000 units, 8.8 percent; and Toshiba Corp., fifth place with 882,000 units, 6.2 percent.

The order of the first to third rankings remained unchanged from the preceding year. Sony, which held fifth place a year earlier, rose to fourth place, while Toshiba, formerly in the fourth place, swapped places with Sony and fell to fifth.
