I'll bet they are very, very sorry they lost as much of their market-leading position as they have in the chipset space.

I think there are two developments that bear watching. Intel's involvement with giga- byte in developing product for Brookdale, and Intel's apparent decision to sub contract more motherboard manufacturing in the Far East.

INTEL announced on Tuesday it will close its factory in Puerto Rico this year, leaving 1,300 people without jobs.

Intel has been operating in the U.S. Caribbean territory since 1980, manufacturing motherboards for desktop computers and network interface cards, the San Jose, California-based company said in a written statement. The factory will close in the first half of this year, the company said.

"Despite spending a significant amount of money on upgrading plant equipment, employee productivity efforts and a voluntary separation program, the manufacturing plant was not competitive with manufacturing operations in other regions of the world, particularly the Far East," the company said in the statement.
