NEC To Supply Cray With Supercomputers On OEM Basis
Wednesday, February 28, 2001
TOKYO (Nikkei)--NEC Corp. (6701) has reached an agreement with its archrival Cray Inc. to supply supercomputers to the U.S. firm on an OEM basis, the company announced Wednesday.

The agreement also includes a marketing alliance and the purchase of 25 million dollars in preferred shares without voting rights from Cray, or about 7% of the U.S. firm.

Cray filed a dumping complaint against NEC supercomputers with the U.S. Department of Commerce in July 1996, resulting in a 454% punitive tariff that effectively barred the firm from the U.S. market.

The proposed tie-up is conditional on Cray asking the U.S. government to retract the dumping duties on Japanese supercomputers, including those made by Fujitsu Ltd. (6702) and Hitachi Ltd. (6501).

"The dumping duties will be removed by the middle of this year," said Kazuhiko Kobayashi, a managing director of NEC. Cray would quickly ask the Department of Commerce to withdraw the tax, he said.
