James O'Shaughnessy wrote a whole book on evaluations of different metrics. His main conclusion, based on massive data back testing, was that price to sales is the best metric, and buying stocks at a low price to sales ratio has historically yielded the best results. Title, I believe, is "What Works on Wall Street".
