NEC Buys Into Cray Supercomputers

NEC Corporation has agreed to invest $25 million in supercomputer maker Cray Inc. (stock: CRAY) in a deal that could open the doors for the Japanese company to resume selling its supercomputers in the United States for the first time in several years. Under the plan, Cray, Seattle, will market NEC vector supercomputers alongside the company's current Cray SV1 and forthcoming Cray SV2 vector systems. The 10-year OEM agreement gives Cray exclusive rights to distribute the NEC SZ-5 Series and successor vector products in North America. In exchange for the investment, NEC will receive 3 million nonvoting shares of Cray stock. Supercomputers still hold an important niche for complex calculations such as simulating automobile crashes or changes in climates
