Qualcomm announces multi-mode, multi-band chipset family at 3GSM Congress

By Dennis Andrews, Senior Research Editor

At the 3GSM Congress in Cannes, Qualcomm announced their latest MSM6xxx chipset family. Using direct RF-to-baseband conversion technology, these will support a range of IMT-2000 standards including cdma2000, 1xEV and W-CDMA, as well as providing compatibility with GSM, GPRS, IS-95 and AMPS. The new family will additionally support a range of features such as GPS and Bluetooth, SIM support, MPEG-1, and MP3..

The various chip products will interface with Qualcomm's radioOne Zero Intermediate Frequency (ZIF) or direct conversion architecture which converts incoming RF signals directly to or from baseband analog signals. This technology eliminates the need for large IF SAW filters and additional IF circuitry.

Samples of the initial products form the MSM6xxx family are expected th ship during 1Q 2002."
