Talk about a proverbial Rock of Gibraltar!

Since the time of our last update on Phillip Morris (NYSE: MO), big MO's shares have held steady in the face of the tempest rocking the financial markets, advancing a little over 3% compared with a 4% decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and an 8.5% drop in the S&P 500.

Obviously, much of this steadiness can be attributed to Phillip Morris' "defensive" nature, i.e. its low valuation (a mere 11 times fiscal 2001 estimates $4.07), strong free cash flow and a tasty dividend (over $2 per share annually).
