M, if I may, the fundamentals in the Naz just don't support a broad move there, IMO. They tried it in January, and it didn't last long. And now WCOM lays off 5,000, in addition to JDSU, etc., etc., etc.
The PE of the Nas 100 is something like 184, Fleck says. The idea that the market may go lower than even the bears think is something I've kicked around. Would they privatize Social Security with a 5,000 Nasdaq or an 11,000 Dow? I just really don't think so.
As for shorting the Dow, I don't know; there's still a lot of tech trash to be had on the short side, IMO. E Toys won't be the last to go to zero.
How about short Goldman?<g>

Hi Mike,

You've been right about the Naz for a long time.

But now the DOW too?

short the DOW is the way to be, cause if we go down hard, I do not see how the DOW can be immune. The DOW is due to drop on gravity anyway.

Based on fundamental PE to growth rate analysis the Naz needed to come down. And there's still room for PE contraction considering we're in uncertain economic times.

But the DOW? It must still have single digit PEs doesn't it? Do you know a source that compiles the DOW 30, S&P 500, and the Naz 100 PEs?(composite PE for each index) I'd be really interested to see how they compare today.

mis,

The big difference is I'm buying for the long term, which to me is 2 to 3 years plus! Are you going to hold on to your shorts for that long? If not then you should be able to see we are not looking at the same half full / half empty glass. I sell short, but at this time I do not have any shorts not even a naked call option! One other point, I see everyone talking about the big washout and the bear continuing and I say look out for it could turn on a dime from here!
