Ingram Micro Q4 tops forecasts, warns of weaker Q1
SANTA ANA, Calif., Feb 28 (Reuters) - Computer product distributor and marketer Ingram Micro Inc. (NYSE:IM - news) on Wednesday reported fourth quarter earnings that topped forecasts by a cent, but said it was experiencing a significant slowdown in demand.

The Santa Ana, Calif-based company said its net income was $57.9 million, or 39 cents a share in the quarter, compared to net income of $75 million, or $51 cents a share. Net sales for the quarter were $8.07 billion vs. $7.83 billion.

Citing a weak economic outlook and lower spending on technology, Ingram said it expected sales to decline in the first quarter from year-ago sales, to between $7.3 billion and $7.6 billion.

Net income for the quarter was projected to fall to between $22 million and $27 million, or 15 to 18 cents per diluted share.

Shares of Ingram Micro closed down 2.8 percent or off 40 cents to $13.80 on the Nasdaq.

Circuit City sees Q4/2001 earnings shortfall, cuts 300 jobs
RICHMOND, Va., Feb 28 (Reuters) - Circuit City Stores Inc. (NYSE:CC - news) said on Wednesday its fourth-quarter and fiscal 2001 results will fall short of expectations and it is laying off about 300 workers, or less than 1 percent of its total workforce, from its corporate and division offices.

The Richmond, Va.-based electronics retailer said it expects fourth-quarter earnings of 44 cents and fiscal 2001 earnings of 54 cents a share, well below the 46 cents and 69 cents a share, respectively, that on average are expecting, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

The company said despite seeing strong December sales, it has seen a fall off in sales across all categories and, as a result, must ``plan conservatively'' for the first half of the year.

In addition, fourth quarter and full year earnings expectations include pretax, one-time severance costs of $5 million related to the workforce reduction. After the reductions, Circuit City will have about 53,400 employees.

Shares of Circuit City ended the day down 2.13 percent, or about 33 cents, closing at $15.17 on the New York Stock Exchange.
