Dave: Not much in your message to take issue with, I agree on many fronts.

I would say, however, that giving credit to any one group, such as hedge funds, or calling them smarter than anyone else, is probably a stretch. More than one of them has folded in the recent past, simply because they were convinced they WERE smarter. Each of us, in whatever group, has something to bring to the table, and all styles need to be understood.

Mutual Funds are not to be pitied, either. Most of those who invest in them are just that, investors, holding for very long periods of time in retirement vehicles. Statistics bear out the notion that the buy-and-hold strategy they employ is a sound one, over time.

You and I are both old enough to know that things really DO happen in cycles; what comes around, etc., is as true here as anywhere else. We still fight wars, and see prejudice and famine, seemingly helpless to stop the vicious cycle of each, regardless of our intent. Human nature is alive, well, and not changing much.

This will all end in time, but I think anyone who tries to predict it is a bit foolish. Even Greenspan won't do that, and he knows as much as anyone, perhaps more.

Anyway, I babble. As always, my thanks for your thoughts and encouragement. My time will be spent formulating a plan for the future, whatever it brings. RK
