I believe the reason many think the market will go that low is that once mutual fund shareholders do their income taxes and find out how they got massacred by their mutual funds (capital gains owed big-time, while the value of their holdings has crashed), they will bail out of funds....and the funds will just keep dumping stock.

Potentially a real ugly outcome, when you consider the funds hold huge percentages of many companies' stock.
