• Itanium server chips. The long-delayed server chip and the precursor to McKinley will come
out in the second quarter.

"The sheer complexity of the task--the number of variables--was really more work than any of
us in the company imagined," Otellini said, explaining why the chip was delayed so many
times. "We had to debug it. We have to develop a new chipset. We were working with four
(operating systems), one of which was a stable platform"

But in case you were wondering if it really mattered, there was another Register article on the topic:

But more significantly, McKinley will be a "major new platform
release" with chipset support for Direct Infiniband I/O, and
Scalability Port, the latter being high speed I/O for the 870 McKinley
chipset.

Clearly this makes McKinley a more attractive proposition than it
was. But would Merced get these benefits too, even if this meant
backporting them? When we put the question to Otellini he said he
couldn't say, but added that more details would be made public on
Thursday. We put the same question to Duane Zitner. Hewlett
Packard's systems chief, he said he "not 100pc sure" but from what
he knew, he rated this as a firm no-no. Itanic systems were "test
environments" he added, as if we didn't already know.

JC,

According to my notes, Craig (or Andy, if you believe the guy who demoed the P4+XP system) said that Merced will have its production release in Q2.

I haven't watched the webcast, but I seem to recall an article that Merced would be released in Q2 regardless of the availability of the OS (Windows 64).
