It may be a sensible investment, since IBM attributes Big Blue's growing strength in the server hardware market directly to Linux. In a report by industry analysts IDC, which is slated to be released on Monday, IBM is ranked as the No. 1 Intel-based server vendor in IDC's Asia Pacific/Japan region, a distinction that belonged to Compaq for the last three years. The company sees this as clear proof that IBM's strategy to embrace Linux for its server line is successful. IBM recently announced that Lawson, the top convenience store chain in Japan, planned to install more than 15,000 Linux-based xSeries servers. The Chinese postal service also plans to use Linux with its IBM servers. IDC reports that Linux server shipments grew 144 percent in 2000 in Asia Pacific, and Linux has gained at least a 7.8 percent share of the overall server OS market in that region. "Linux is really changing the way businesses look at and implement technology around the world," said Jim Gargan, director of strategy for IBM's eServer xSeries. "It's cost-effective, memory-efficient and is based on an open system -- elements that play extremely well in all regions of the world, whether it's for a huge corporate e-infrastructure, a small e-business or a government enhancing it's Web capabilities," Gargan said. "Linux represents a reliable and affordable operating system that can scale with you as you grow." Microsoft's domination over the desktop market remains strong, but Linux is holding its own on the server side, according to recently released statistics from industry analyst IDC.
