What purpose to they provide? Who do they help?


They have the same right to exist as you do. Certainly you are not telling us what we can and can't do with our money? Maybe you need to move to California if those are your leanings

Shorting provides for a more efficient market.

Who provides a bottom during a market crash? Shorts covering their position.

Who allows longs to buy their favorite stock after a pull back? Who keeps stocks from becoming way overvalued? Shorts

Futures I won't go into, but it puts food on your table.
