Ah--As if only by escaping the boundaries of the regular structures and the expectations of society, could they find "themselves" ?(I hate all those clichés, but am not sure what else to use)and the only way to do that was by the actual physical act of leaving.

Maybe this is all an expansion on Va. Woolf's Room of One's Own? I know when I first read that, I felt as if it that room, that freedom, meant a great deal more than just a place and time to write.
I remember being so shocked by Kate Chopin's Awakening just a couple of years ago, trying to accept that Edna saw no options in her life other than suicide. I guess that horrible love story in Titanic was about just that topic.
