>> I was wondering what is so special aboutn Amazon's front end compared to other large traditional retailers with a presence on the web.
Well, it is already written and it works well. So it is worth a few hundred million. Because it would cost that much or more for a new retailer to get established.

You believe the site would cost a few hundred million to write? I do not believe it would cost in excess of $20 million. Creating a known name often referred to as a brand by the analysts would cost a few hundred million.
