She is a woman who masquerades as a man in a strange country, where she has been shipwrecked. She is the equal of the men around her. I think her going dressed as a man is a metaphorical statement of her equality. She doesn't become a man- she acts the part of a man. If she was interested in having corrective surgery to become a man- I'd agree with you, there is a contradiction. Have you ever read or seen this play?
