Are You Listening, Ariba?
By Paul DeMartino

The Internet Analystsm combed through research submitted to the Multex.com database this week, looking for Strong Buys. In order to be included in this column, a stock must receive a firm's highest rating, and the valuation methodology must be included in the report.

ARIBA (ARBA): On Feb. 27, Thomas Weisel Partners reiterated its Strong Buy on ARIBA shares. In the firm's view, ARIBA's decelerating revenue and accounting changes have coupled with the more general economic malaise to punish the share price. However, the risks are priced into the stock, and there appears to be considerable upside from "ARIBA's market position [and] financial strength," neither of which are currently reflected in the firm's view. It values the company with price-to-sales, price-to-earnings and P/E-to-growth (PEG) ratios, and finds it undervalued in each case. The firm projects earnings of $0.26 a share in fiscal 2001 (ending September) and $0.52 in fiscal 2002. ARBA shares closed at $17.25 on Feb. 27. The report is a company update in advance of the B2B e-commerce company's planned analyst conference on the following day, Feb. 28. Fully expecting ARIBA management would likely read the report, the authors write: "ARIBA indicated that it will discuss its 'vision, strategy and road map for next-generation B2B collaborative solutions. To us, this means a detailed overview of the logic for the AGILE [SOFTWARE (AGIL)] acquisition, integration plans and strategic direction." Presumably, ARIBA's management took the hint, knowing what questions to prepare for. The rest of the report concerns the company's current market valuation. There were 1723 downloads of research on ARIBA from the Multex.com database, and 87 new reports contributed, during the week of Feb. 12 to 18.
