Gulf Coast shipyard lays off about 1,000 workers

JACKSON, Mississippi, Mar 02, 2001 (AP WorldStream via COMTEX) -- Friede Goldman Halter Inc. has laid off more than1,000 workers, or 16.7 percent of its overall work force, and shut down one of its shipyards because of a dispute over a drilling rig construction contract with a Norwegian company.

Friede Goldman Halter said Thursday it does not intend to complete construction of two semi-submersible drilling rigs for Ocean Rig ASA without a new agreement.
