slacker, 401ks are great. however, pensions used to be great in the past. i know someone getting full medical coverage for life. that's a lot of 401k money. in addition, they get monthly $$$s.

oh, and there are a lot of folks who don't contribute much to 401ks.

the concept that there was nothing similar to 401ks and so the numbers can't be compared is just not true. there is some difference, sure. just not as big as people want to think to take away meaning from the lowest recorded u.s. savings rate in history.
