"does Cingular wait for WCDMA?" Perhaps Cingular would like to wait for WCDMA. However, QCOM rightly sescribed their prolific development program as a freight train. If Sprint and Verizon move rapidly, but WCDMA evolvs slowly, Cingular will be placed in a position where they may be forced to compete with GSM against 1X-RTT. This could cause them to loose massive numbers of subs. On the other hand, an overlay of 1XCDMA over GSM may be full of problems. If QCOM moves rapidly enough with the multimode, multiband ASICS, this could help ease the transition.
