"it is only useless if you don't like the number" are skeeter bugs like no see 'ems? 401K $ are taken off the top before taxes, so if someone makes $110, has $10 put into a 401K with $100 income reported for tax purposes, and spends $101, that is a lot different than the era when people were "saving" 6% or whatever without 401K's.
