"Today, data and voice networks are almost wholly operated separately and over separate infrastructures."

Alex- What you post about efficiency savings of packetized voice is what I've been reading for nearly 12 years. But the excerpt above--Well therein lies the crux of the problem. Seems to me that if the excerpt above is the case, then there is little incentive to kill off a voice network that works, works well, and is paid for. Eventually it may happen, but not nearly as quickly as trade magazines, writers, and expert analysts seem to think it will.

And as I believe Jeff just pointed out, voice gets cheaper and cheaper and cheaper and cheaper. What business wants to get into competition with not only a totally saturated voice market, but a market that is getting hammered with price cuts everyday.

As the America's Network editor pointed out (in my upstream reference), seems the logical thing to do is to throw in the towel and figure out how to milk the 100 year old voice plants for all it's worth. (sigh of frustration) Seems no amount of deregulation or regulation will ever kill it. Only age will.

Maybe it's just that I'm not seeing things clearly because of my poor attitude due to my telecom infrastructure investments having been cremated. I'm just getting tired of the front page headlines, "VoIP-The Killer App." Or "Packet Voice-It's Going to Change the World." Or "VoDSL-It's Time is Now." Etc, etc. -MikeM(From Florida)
