Ahem,

Scumbria, sorry to ask a sacrilegeious question, but why will most people still need faster and faster CPUs? If there is a lesson from the PC market implosion, a possible scenario unfolding could be the final commoditization stage of the PCs. IE: the Moore's Law thing could still go on, but the average audience may already not be interested (as far as speed is concerned)

I know there are people paying massive amounts of cash for top of the line refrigerators and microwave ovens, but those are niche markets. Let's face it, few people care how many coils are in their toaster or whether toaster A can burn toasts faster than toaster B.

If you take a look at the stores today, there's a lot of buying activity in the sub $500 PCs. With bundling of prepaid dial up service, it is not unusual to pick up $99 eMachines.

Perhaps the median prices of PCs have really spiraled downward significantly this past year to the point where it is hard to push them up again in the future. When did you last hear of price increases in toasters?

Unless...the killer app shows up.
