WS: Thanks! That's an interesting way to view it, and it mostly sounds plausible. I wouldn't interpret the morning activity quite as she does, although I would join her by emphasizing that the action into the close offers our best signals on big-money activity. I also would never call the big money Smart Money. There are more smart players on SI than in the fund world.

This close isn't entirely surprising to me, since, as I said, I'm a bit suspicious of mid-day rallies into down markets, but I certainly am surprised that it weakened so dramatically. I thought maybe we'd end flat, plus or minus a few points. There has to be a lot of fear about earnings earnings ahead of those tech conferences. From the action in the fibers and networkers, we have to assume someone big is going to blow up there. It'd be a bit early for CSCO, since its next quarter doesn't end until April, but maybe JNPR. There's going to be a lot of disappointment heading into the weekend if they can't lift the Nasdaq at least a bit on the close. We're threatening to go out closer to the low of the day than the high.
