john,

i knew i needed another broker! i'm with msdw. they did warn me, by mail, but i never open the mail from them and didn't even know the rule existed until it was too late.

who are you with? i am seriously thinking of changing next time i get out of equities into cash.

don

p.s. last hour is upon us like a spell. an evil spell woven by mean-spirited, nasty, brutish profit-takers? or a good spell of golden-haired believers and buyers? oy vey, pass the gin and gimme another zantac.

jqp,

it wasn't a margin issue. there really is some obscure sec rule about this. if you buy, sell the stock, and buy back in in the same day you are in violation.

It happened to me last fall. I have a TD Waterhouse IRA and they never explained why they locked my account. I made such a stink that they came back a week later and said "sorry, trade away".

TD Waterhouse never explained other than "you can't day trade in your IRA" which was crazy since they have been happily accepting my commissions for over two years. In fact, they just gave me NASDAQ, level II because of my trading activities. They shouldn't do this if they don't want you to trade in your IRA.

Thanks for the post. I now better understand what happened.

I think the problem arises if you put in orders that trigger a debit balance in the IRA account. I may find out soon enough, since my IRA account is $1.90 short, looks like, but I haven't heard anything yet. Usually if I make a mistake, they simply refuse the trade, but you could probably do things rapidly enough to create a noticeable deficit.

I bought and sold a block of BKP the day that the Hunt offer came--purely by chance.
