the other possibility is that they are doing so in lieu of the federal govt. extending a direct line of credit to the troubled entities...

It looks like the financing was for the holding company debt only- not the subsidiary ute. In exchange for making the holding company stronger (and more likely to withstand a chapter 7/11 of the subsidiary) they get warrants on the best part of the business. I'm sure they studied the situation quite closely, with access to data the common investor is unlikely to see.

My city has a lasting monument to that effort. Easily one of the largest buildings of its time (the 20s) and exactly out of line with the growth path of the city. Arrogance put it in a 'build it and they will come' location and as I say, it is now a monument.
