Paul - ask your buddies at Intel if my theory is correct...

bapco.com

Look at what scores what, then look at the performance drop associated with Windows ME compared to Windows 2000 on these tests.

Athlon 1.20GHZ Windows ME 219

P3 1.13GHZ Windows 2000 212
P3 1.00GHZ Windows 2000 205
P3 1.13GHZ Windows ME 195
P3 933MHZ Windows 2000 194
P3 933MHZ Windows 98 191
P3 1.00GHZ Windows ME 189
P3 866MHZ Windows 2000 186
P3 866MHZ Windows 98 182

P4 1.50GHZ Windows 2000 205
P4 1.40GHZ Windows 2000 199
P4 1.30GHZ Windows 2000 188
P4 1.5GHZ Windows ME 178
P4 1.3GHZ Windows ME 166

My theory is, the P4 design team went on a 5 year drinking binge, at the end of which they faxed some plans from Winchip over to production.

The guys at Winchip were a pretty disgruntled bunch when the company was sold off to VIA and most of them were layed off - it seems reasonable that they'd be willing to let some stuff slip.

What do you think happened?

Will VIA sue Intel for royalties on P4? Face it, VIA does own the Winchip design.

:-)

Paul: Intergraph is a pretty screwed up company. It will be interesting to see if they try to sue Intel again.

My understanding is that Intergraph already has 2 other court cases going against Intel (one being an appeal of the "forced" cross-licensing claim that they lost).
