Ed, [edited] I clicked on the link and it showed it was ACTUALLY formatting [a counter was incrementing]. For two irrational seconds I was scared sheetless. [a sailing term] :)

[edit: my wife found my old IBM DOS manual for version 6. Amazing how much neat stuff DOS had. I'll be dangerous]

Thank-you for providing the /u answer.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. The link had an interesting opening that should get people's attention.

It reminded my of a program I wrote for the original PC-XT 8088 machines. It displayed the FORMAT messages and gave the user the option of typing Y or N. Needless to say, no matter what was typed, the program would continue, displaying the format's progress, and causing the hard drive indicator lights to flash with the timing one would see if a real format was taking place.

The program finished by displaying the statistics of the disk, and an error message indicating that the operating system couldn't be found. It would beep at each keypress after that. One needed to type a password or re-boot to proceed.

P.P.S.

My boss didn't think it was funny.
