I certainly never claimed it was, and I've never seen President Bush, or any Republican politician claim it was a panacea. The demographic problem related to the structure of the social security system is very real. Putting our head in the sand and pretending things will just work out, isn't leadership. And make no mistake, that's exactly what we have been seeing from Democratic (and most Republican) politicians for years. President Bush was the one with real guts who took on the "third rail of politics". And in the process, created a new national dialogue describing his vision of where we need to shift the structure of the system in order to ensure long term sustainability. I believe you said you were undecided on the partial privatization issue. Not on the social security system as a whole. The only thing I believe you've highlighted is the reluctance of President Bush to describe, in detail, the short term cost of moving toward partial privatization. No great surprise why there, change of this magnitude must be developed and described carefully over a period of time, so that every American is "enrolled" in the process. Undoubtedly, it's one of the main reasons he decided to form a bipartisan task force, to come up with specific recommendations by the fall. Frankly, I'm surprised he's gotten this far in bringing the electorate along so quickly. Especially, when Democrats have done nothing but demogogue the issue and scare elderly Americans. Like the recently heard Democratic leaders, you've demonstrated that it is very easy to be against something, without offering any real innovative solutions on your own. That's about what I expected would be highlighted by our exchange on this topic. I had hoped for me. Michael
