I've seen this in reproductions of 17th century medical texts. Sperms were little people with testicles filled with people, and so on. This was because, after the first microscopes were invented, that's what the researchers THOUGHT they saw through the inferior optics. This notion became embraced by the church and was adopted by the backers of the anti-abortion movement.

Here is a good retrospective on the modern vehemence about the start of life:

2think.org

I posted this previously and I think the most intelligent criticism from the opposition I got was "Carl Sagan was a bigtime pothead". Later in that post, Carl was criticized for coming up with a great idea (dealing with abstract curves) while high, and having sex with his wife in the shower. Said poster, Carl was thinking about the wrong "curves". I don't know if the story was true or apocryphal, but it didn't seem to address the rationale behind the paper.

If you would also like to take an intellectual attempt at discussing it, I'd be game. I think this was a well thought-out position piece.
