"of the money, for the money, to hell with the people."

This pre-dates Bill. That is big reason why Perot did so well in 1992, if he had understood the forces there well enough, he could have carried the election. Nader understands this, but the Green Party didn't have the money to get his message out, plus he had the negative image of the Green Party itself to overcome.

Let's face it, the attempt to reform politics by reducing the power of the parties has failed miserably. Individuals raising their own funds on a national level will never escape the taint of possible influence buying. The costs have gotten so high that it is probably not possible for individual small donors to come up with enough cash to finance a national election. So the candidates have to hit up corporations, the wealthy, large interest groups, etc. And the amounts are such that people with be left with the feeling that there has to be some quid pro quo even if there is not.
