Japan Ministry Backing Clean Gasoline Research for Fuel Cell Applications

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry plans to invite
domestic automakers and energy companies to participate in the
development of technology aimed at removing sulfur from regular gasoline
for use in fuel cell-powered vehicles, according to Nikkei Weekly.

The ministry plans to establish an official body with Toyota Motor Corp.,
Honda Motor Corp. and other companies this month to set unified quality
standards for the gasoline. It will also seek funding in the country's 2002
budget to subsidize technology development.

The ministry has sided with gasoline as the preferred method of hydrogen
extraction for use in fuel-cell vehicles, saying gasoline would be more
practical than methanol because existing service stations can be used to
supply modified gasoline to fuel-cell vehicles.

The ministry plans to call on approximately 80 companies to participate in
the project, including Toyota, Honda, Nissan Motor Corp., Mitsubishi
Motors Corp., Mazda Motor Corp. and Nippon Mitsubishi Oil Corp.

Analysts predict the initiative will draw backlash from the country's
methanol industry and automakers that favor extracting hydrogen from
methanol.
