There are many middle class people making decent incomes, yet are unable to save any money whatsoever. Add some children into the picture and meaningful savings are out of the picture for most people. Increasing world competition has put a lid on their yearly raises and yet the govt. is growing at 4% to 8% per year. This discrepancy is unacceptable. The savings rate is atrocious, partly becvause of rampant consumerism endemic in this country, but also because of a tax burden which is too high on everyone. BK

BWAC You forgot fica about 7% on the first 70k or so and 1.25 medicare on all income. Any tax is always too high for those who pay but when you get it this high it will ultimately stifel the economy. It only got this high because the over the last few years there was so much to be made that paying excessive taxes seemed like a relatively small price.. Mike
