DMA: What you (and the Prez-Select) both need to realize is that too much local/state power also can corrupt. There is a reason the federal government is so strong today ... yes, perhaps too strong. That is because people like George Wallace and Strom Thurmond (in his early days) said "Segregation forever" and juries of good ol' white boys wouldn't convict Klansmen when they sent people to the Great Beyond.

When states act irresponsibly, then the federal government has to step in to preserve the concept of "justice." GWB campaigned on giving more power to the states because "Y'all can spend money smarter than we can here in D.C." Think about this for a second. What we have in Utah today is a state government that resembles a theocracy. Colorado recently said no to hate crimes legislation (can't single out special groups of people), but then turned around and singled out land owners for special protection from animal rights advocates. So as the federal government shrinks, look for state governments to grow whackier every year.

So you raise a valid point: It is self-destructive to reward corruption with more power. But don't forget about state legislative assemblies, such as Kentucky's, which made it legal a couple of years ago for preachers to carry guns inside churches for self-defense. (I can see the headline now: "God 1, Satan 0 in church shoot-out".)
