hi ed thank you for the reply on the start up utilities. the first link is for startup manager2.0, and it specifies only win95 and win98. that's the one i already have and believe i can not use on win2000pro. the second one looked good until i saw "Requirements: VB6 Runtime files, Visual Basic 6.0 Runtime" (i seem to be wanting to get away from .vbs for virus-type vulnerability), and that it had an "Outlook-inspired" interface. this goes hand-in-hand with the vbs thing. but i have placed the second one aside for future consideration. i can always try it and remove it if i see problems. again, thank you :) mark
