OT re antional debt:

As a nation, we have been irresponsible for so long, that we no longer even ask, "should we have a national debt?" Instead, we've re-framed the question into, "how much debt can we have before getting into trouble?" That's the wrong question.

The principle that every generation should pay their own way, and not leave debts for their children to make good on (or default on, by creating inflation), is as valid now as it was in the 1790s.
