Joan,

One of the more amazing distortions of the hog market occurred in October, 1998, when the price of live hogs dropped to nine cents a pound. Another cousin mused at the time that his grandfather was getting the same price in 1937. The corporates could weather the squeeze, but a lot of the honest, but undercapitalized, little operations were wiped out. The ugly side of capitalism, as it blindly destroys families and family farming, in a fabricated squeeze. We have any number of alternative futures we can create in rural America. The present course sure doesn't seem to be the most sensible or prudent choice. But, I don't see the present administration doing much to change things, except possibly to grease the skids for more corporate asset grabs. 'Free markets' is an oxymoron in the farmbelt.
