SK Tel agrees to offer CDMA tech to China Unicom

SEOUL, March 4 (Reuters) - South Korea's top cellular phone operator SK Telecom said on
Sunday it had signed an agreement to provide China Unicom with code division multiple access
(CDMA) technology and to co-operate in Internet-related services.

``Both companies will work together to set up the CDMA service networks of China Unicom at an
earlier time and to upgrade the system,'' SK Telecom said in a statement.

CDMA is a digital wireless standard that allows more phone calls and data to be crammed into a
given frequency spectrum.

SK Telecom would provide China Unicom, the second largest mobile company in China, with the expertise
and technology to establish
CDMA networks, spokesman Paik Chang-don said.

He said SK Telecom was the first telecoms company in the world to start a CDMA-based mobile service in
1996.

U.S. company Qualcomm (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news) first developed the original technology and chips.

The Euro vendors want indeed to fence the North American out. OK, you can accuse me of a bit of an adept conspiracy theory. sometimes, think the Scandinavians gang up against outsiders:

TeleDenmark bought Sunrise, a small Swiss operator, bundle it with Diax (another Swiss operator) and kicked Nortel out of the 3G Swiss market.
