Still seems like word games -- the net result is the old woman is removed from life support. Why? Because of a belief that brain waves are important to the quality of existence (or the hopefulness of the final outcome) and people without those attributes may be disconnected.

I understand why you want to avoid value judgements like "worth" and other difficult things but that is disingenuous. Your (or the family's) estimation of the "hopelessness" of her situation is what? A value judgement that one's worth (to oneself anyway) is determined by some estimate of hope, even when that comes from outside.

I'd say that abortion, as a choice, comes about as a result of an estimation of hope as well by the mother - the very person who will be charged with caring. She is signing up for an 18+ year commitment and the estimates of hope for the shrimp-like growth inside her seems to be her's alone.

Your avoidance of terms like ensoulment and avoidance of the theological arguments seems like a ploy to avoid the hard facts that people who are against abortion aren't equally willing to ensure that there is hope. Neither are opponents of abortion seeking, at an equal priority, the end of worldwide hopelessness produced by poverty and squalor. Clearly you think that it is okay to terminate hopeless cases but only MEDICALLY hopeless cases. What about socially or situationally hopeless cases?
