Sure it's possible that this can be a long drawn out affair. Anything is possible. That's why it's a mistake to use margin or not have a cash reserve. It's also possible that the only good thing to be in now is gold. But what is probable? As business people we have to move proportionately to our estimated probabilities. It does seem that there are too many telcos around so they are not making good enough profits to support a boom. But there are other sectors of tech. I can't see why spending on the products of SEBL, ITWO, VERITAS etc. will fall off a lot and for a long time. Those products return the cost of investment rapidly. And can you
figure a way out for corporations to store lots more data without having to buy more storage equipment?
Meanwhile I am trying to get a DSL line from the local phone company, Bell Canada. They are basically ignoring me. They as good as admitted that they are too busy, I suppose installing DSL for large companies. There's a boom there somewhere.
You may indeed be right. Maybe the P/E's will go to the single digits. and stay there for a long time. But IMHO that's not probable. Despite what we hear lately about the virtues of conventional, non-tech stocks, they are usually not an appealing investment. Competition is worse there, and growth is slow. Try Procter & Gamble or Gillette or CItigroup. Long term they are uninteresting. Typical.
