To me, the most humane people are those who keep their eye on the ball and contribute to political and economic progress.

That's an, er, interesting definition of humane.

They favor capitalism..., constitutional democracy and the rule of law... They take care of their families; volunteer in their communities; support their favorite charities; and are generally personable, courteous, and kind..........

Sound like good citizens to me. I favor all those things. I practice all those things. I think, though, the connection with "humane" is distant. Certainly not inhumane, IMO. I would not fault those people, but surely that's not the best our society has to offer.

To me, humane is about minimizing suffering. Favoring capitalism and constitutional democracy for a century while they take root is not remotely in a class with providing big-time family planning services today. Nor is it in a class with holding the hand of a dying person today.
