CB,

re

The theory of the Tragedy of the Commons states that when a resource is collectively owned by a group of people, each will exploit the resource, overusing it, and thus ultimately destroying the resource. In other words, everyone acts as a free rider, ignoring the group's collective interests in favor of their own.

That is exactly what has happened to Britains fishing grounds.

What has happened is an outright disgrace, the UK fishing grounds and industry are being utterly destroyed. I know the same thing has happened in the USA, but least they have done something about it. Another generation from now, I bet they treat the their fishing grounds more like a natural farm and take care how much, and what, they harvest.

In bad times Luc sayes he will move to New Zealand (for some reason -g-). I would move to Iceland because at least they know how to look after the friggin fish, and their fishing industry.

pearly.

Didn't a friend of our very own Eddie R. Gammon take this photo, which may win MSNBC's Photo of the Year Contest... by default? (g)

>>By providing poor families with food, clothing, shelter and medical care, in perpetuity, we triggered the Tragedy of the Commons.<<

Perhaps you haven't noticed but in countries where governments essentially provide no social welfare benefits what so ever the poor continue to proliferate. The difference is that in those other places there is virtually no opportunity to move up because there is no safety net to provide a leg up when the opportunity presents itself. They simply die in greater numbers.

And if you think the existence of a safety net was responsible for the "Rosa Lee problem way of life" you need to go back and read that article again and again.

CB, I could make a exception and vote you for senator if you moved to my state. -g- Too many elected officials only feel empowered by having those individuals depend on them to continue the handouts.
